Slurry pit on a dairy farm

Slurry bugs · biological slurry treatment

Slurry bugs that stop you mixing the pit.

“Slurry bugs” is what most farmers call a biological slurry additive — live bacteria that digest the fibre that forms crust. Microbe-Lift® DFP is a live liquid consortium that goes to work on contact: crust breaks down, odour drops, nutrients stay in the slurry, and you do not need to mix if you follow the correct dosing plan.

What are slurry bugs?

Bacteria that eat the crust

Slurry naturally contains undigested plant fibre — cellulose and lignin from forage and bedding. That fibre is what floats up and sets as a thick crust, and it's what makes slurry hard to stir, pump and spread evenly. “Slurry bugs” are beneficial bacteria (and enzymes) that use that fibre as food, breaking it down so the slurry turns into a more homogeneous, free-flowing liquid — while releasing nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium back into the slurry as fertiliser.

They are not chemicals and they don't just mask smell — they change the biology of the store. The difference between products comes down to whether the bacteria are actually alive, how diverse they are, and whether they're dosed into the right conditions.

What good slurry bugs deliver

  • • Crust and surface/bottom solids broken down
  • • Slurry flows freely — easier to pump and spread
  • • Less odour in the shed and on the field
  • • Nitrogen retained, so more fertiliser value
  • • No mixing needed when you follow the correct dosing plan
  • • Diesel, agitator wear and time saved

The slurry bugs we supply

Microbe-Lift® DFP — live liquid, active on contact

Live liquid

No sachet to dissolve, no activation step. DFP is a live liquid consortium — it starts working the moment it hits the slurry and distributes evenly through the store.

50 years, proven

From Ecological Laboratories, Inc., used across 5 continents in slurry, lagoons, lakes and industrial wastewater. Eco Balance is the sole UK & Ireland distributor of MICROBE-LIFT®.

Every system

Dairy, beef, pig, sheep, horse and poultry. We size the dosing to your slurry tank, slurry store, lagoon, or manure heap by tonnage — not a one-size sachet.

What you'll see

From crust to flowing in about two months

Week 1

Odour and ammonia drop noticeably in the shed and on spreading.

~1 month

Crust and surface/bottom solids start breaking down.

~2 months

Slurry is transformed — homogeneous, flowing, easy to pump and spread.

Real-world result: a pig farmer's slurry was completely solid — you couldn't push a stick through it. Within two weeks of dosing it began falling below the slats; within two months it was fully transformed and flowing with ease.

Slurry bugs — common questions

Straight answers

Do slurry bugs actually work?

Yes — when the product contains live, effective bacteria and the pit conditions suit them (enough liquid, dosed at the right time). Good slurry bugs digest the fibre that forms crust, so the slurry becomes more homogeneous and easier to pump and spread, with less odour and better-retained nutrients. Cheap or dormant products, or a pit with no liquid to colonise, are the usual reasons farmers say they 'didn't work'.

What are the best slurry bugs for dairy and beef slurry?

Look for a live, biologically diverse product with independent or long-term proof behind it, and match it to your storage. Microbe-Lift® DFP is a live liquid microbial consortium from Ecological Laboratories, Inc. with over 50 years of use worldwide. Because it is liquid and active on contact, there is no sachet to dissolve and no activation step — it starts working as soon as it hits the slurry.

Are liquid slurry bugs better than powder?

Both can work. Powder and sachet products need mixing in warm water and time to 'wake up' before they colonise the store. A live liquid like Microbe-Lift® DFP is active immediately on contact and easy to dose straight in. Liquid also tends to distribute through the slurry more evenly. The bigger factor is whether the bacteria are alive, diverse and dosed correctly.

How quickly do slurry bugs break down crust?

With Microbe-Lift® DFP most farms notice reduced odour within the first week. Crust and surface solids begin breaking down within about a month, and within roughly two months slurry is typically transformed — homogeneous and flowing freely so it pumps and spreads easily.

Can slurry bugs stop me having to mix slurry?

Yes. You do not need to mix if you follow the correct dosing plan. That saves diesel and agitator wear, frees up time, and removes the safety risk of working around an open, agitating pit.

Do you supply slurry bugs in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland?

Yes. Eco Balance Ltd is based in Magheralin, County Down and supplies Microbe-Lift® DFP to dairy, beef, pig, sheep and poultry farms across the whole of Ireland and the UK. The dosing plan is based on the size of your slurry tank, slurry store, lagoon, or manure heap by tonnage.

How are slurry bugs dosed and what does it cost?

Our dosing plan is based only on the size of your slurry tank, slurry store, lagoon, or manure heap by tonnage — so cost depends on the farm. We assess your store first and give you a clear dosing plan and price before anything is ordered. Book a free assessment and we'll work it out with you.
