Every dairy and beef farmer knows the crust. Over a winter of storage, the top of the tank sets into a thick mat that has to be smashed apart with an agitator before you can pump or spread. It's slow, it burns diesel, it wears out machinery, and it's one of the most dangerous jobs on the farm because of the gases released when the crust breaks.
The crust forms because slurry stratifies. Fibres, undigested feed and fats float and bind together at the surface while heavier solids settle at the bottom. Without enough active biology in the tank, none of that material breaks down — it just compacts. The longer it sits, the harder the crust and the deeper the bottom sludge.
The biological answer is to keep the material digesting while it's in store. A live liquid microbial programme like Microbe-Lift DFP adds a high-density population of bacteria that go to work immediately on the fibres, fats and solids that make up the crust. There's no activation step and no mixing to get it started — the microbes are live the moment they hit the slurry.
Farms following the programme correctly see odour and ammonia drop within the first week. Within about a month the crust and sludge start breaking down and the slurry becomes noticeably more liquid. By around two months it's homogeneous — flowing freely, easy to pump, and spreading evenly without blocking pipes.

There's an agronomic upside too: better-broken-down slurry retains nitrogen and infiltrates soil more evenly, which supports sensible fertiliser substitution and keeps nutrients out of watercourses.
